Spanish conquistadors introduced these hats to Europe in the 17th century, and the term "Jipijapa" also refers to the fiber used in their weaving—Carludovica Palmata, the plant that has long defined the craftsmanship behind these legendary hats.

Although its origins trace back to Ecuador, the Panama hat gained worldwide popularity in the 19th century—particularly in 1904, when U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt visited the Panama Canal during its construction while wearing one of these hats. His endorsement propelled the hat into global fame almost instantly. At the time, canal workers relied on these hats for protection against the scorching sun and extreme heat.
Today, Ecuador remains the primary producer of Panama hats, with the most renowned production centers in the cities of Montecristi and Jipijapa, located in the Manabí province.
Originally, Panama hats were traditionally white with a black band— a style that continues to be among the most popular. However, as these hats became integrated into fashion, new variations emerged, introducing a wider array of colors, finishes, sizes, and shapes.
Panama hats are celebrated for their durable, natural weave and timeless elegance. High-quality versions are water-resistant, can be folded without losing their shape, and are considered highly valuable pieces of artisanal craftsmanship.

A well-crafted Panama hat, made with a relatively thick weave, should not be priced below €100. This is not surprising, considering that finer weaves—especially those of the highest quality—can take up to eight months to produce.

For our colored versions, we use only natural dyes to treat the fibers of Paja Toquilla (the other name for Carludovica Palmata). The bands are available in diverse materials, ranging from cotton and linen to the finest natural silk.
